Boston Dynamics and IBM have ed forces to deploy the popular тАФ but controversial тАФ robot dogs at the┬аUS┬аNational Grid sites┬аfor autonomous inspection.┬аThe Boston Dynamics robot, named Spot, will be integrated with┬аartificial intelligence (AI) and other required features developed by IBM Research.┬аThe new robot will┬аbe initially deployed at the electric and gas utility sites in Massachusetts and New York for regular inspections.┬аAI-enabled robots are increasingly being deployed┬аin manufacturing and warehouse settings┬аbut┬аto experience the true benefits, it is necessary to have AI┬аas┬аclose to the┬аorigin of the data as possible.
This move┬аby┬аthe two┬аfirms┬аis likely to encourage more companies to consider making such deployments.┬аIn a IBM said the┬аnew and improved┬аSpot┬аwill give┬аoperations staff тАЬgreater flexibilityтАЭ to inspect equipment.┬аThe companies outlined how industrial operations staff can benefit from the AI-enabled robot.┬аFirst, it is designed to help address safety┬аconcerns┬аin hazardous areas. Next, it equips operations managers with near-realtime insights on equipment health.┬аAnd finally,┬аit would result in┬аoperators spending┬аless time on basic inspection rounds.
While Boston Dynamics┬аis┬аprojecting this┬аas an improved device, it has previously faced backlash┬аfor selling Spot to local police departments, including the NYPD.┬аThen, the police department abruptly┬аcancelled┬аits lease and┬аstopped┬аusing the robot┬аfollowing┬аa public outcry┬аwhich described the devices as тАЬcreepy.тАЭ
But Boston Dynamics┬аsaid the demand for these devices is increasing.┬аThe statement┬аcited an IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV) survey, which showed 56 percent of manufacturers have implemented AI-driven robotics to make autonomous decisions. The survey said 83 percent of manufacturers agree intelligent automation will help them meet strategic challenges and improve business results. However, they also point out that "most edge and IoT devices today are inflexible and often incapable of responding to rapidly changing environments."
